Fans declare ‘Clemsoning’ back after Dabo Swinney falls to Riley Leonard, Duke

Dabo Swinney’s No. 9 Clemson Tigers fell at Duke on Monday 28-7, and college football fans declared “Clemsoning” back.

For the uninitiated, “Clemsoning” is an act of delivering an inexplicably disappointing performance. And the Tigers did just that.

In short, the Blue Devils made the preseason ACC favorite look very, very ordinary en route to beating the Tigers (0-1, 0-1) for the first time since 2004.

“An incredibly disappointing loss that’s in all honesty in all my years of football, I’ve never been a part of a game like that,” Swinney said after the game. “Ever.

“Been here at Clemson a long time, since I’ve been the head coach, we’ve been 58-0 when we rush for 200 and pass for 200. That’s usually a pretty good indicator. In Clemson history, we’re 108-0, but you got to finish. Obviously, we didn’t do that. So many opportunities.”

The Tigers had three turnovers, two blocked kicks and 0 of 3 in the red zone doomed the Tigers.

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard broke loose from a tackler and sprinted to the open for a 44-yard touchdown that highlighted Duke’s tough and physical performance. Jaquez Moore and Jordan Waters ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns to turn this into an unexpected blowout of the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference favorite.

It was Duke’s first win agianst Clemson since 2004 and ended a 28-game losing streak against top-10 opponents. Cade Klubnik threw for a short touchdown to Will Shipley in what became Clemson’s only score.

By the final minutes, Clemson was just trying to keep the chains moving and build toward any type of miracle comeback while many of the orange-clad fans who packed into Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium streamed for the exits with more than 5 minutes left.

The Tigers have likely sent themselves careening down, or even out of, Tuesday’s new poll with this showing. But the Blue Devils could be in line to crack the rankings for the first time since 2018.
